The Allen Brown Guide to Choosing Earrings to Suit the Shape of Your Face

Earrings are an incredibly popular item of jewellery, worn to accentuate almost any outfit.  They can be particularly flattering if you choose the earring type carefully to suit the shape of your face.  Not sure what face shape you have or if you are selecting the right earrings to complement your overall look? Read on and let us explain the key steps to choosing the best earrings to suit the shape of your face.

Determining your face shape

You’ll probably need to look in the mirror and hold your hair back to get a good idea of your face shape.  If you’re still not sure, take a photo and look at that to see what features stand out.

Step 1 – do your forehead, cheekbones and jaws appear to be the same width?  If yes, your face shape is square, round or oval.  If your lower jaw is a smooth continuous line without an obvious chin then your face is round or square.

Step 2 – is your forehead the widest point and then your face tapers in to the chin?  If yes, you have a heart-shaped face.

Step 3 – are your cheekbones the widest part of your face?  If yes, you have a diamond-shaped face.

Step 4 – is your jaw the widest part of your face?  If yes, you have a pear-shaped face.

Which earrings will flatter your face shape?

When it comes to choosing earrings, just as with any other item of jewellery, it all comes down to personal taste.  However, if you want to make a wise choice to help flatter your face or ensure your jewellery gift is well received, here are some top tips to help you decide:

Earrings for an oval face

Long, chandelier or drop earrings that are narrow at the top and then widen out as they get longer can complement an oval face by giving the impression of the bottom of the face being more filled out, which will result in an elegant finish.

Earrings for a long-shaped face

Choosing short rather than long drop earrings will give the impression of a wider face and draw the attention higher up the face towards the eyes.

Earrings to suit a square face

If you want to soften a square face, choosing studs, elegant shapes or those with lots of little stones rather than one big one can have the desired effect.

Earrings for round faces

Choosing long, dangle or drop earrings, particularly those with a slimline design, will help to elongate a round face and give a sophisticated overall effect.

Earrings to suit heart-shaped faces

Opting for earrings that end at, or just above, the chin can deliver a flattering result for heart-shaped faces.
