5 Benefits of Jewellery Repair for Family Heirlooms

Jewellery is one of the most common family heirlooms. Often passed down from generation to generation, due to its value both in monetary terms and sentiment, family jewellery is one of the most exciting items to own.

Sadly, many items of family jewellery spend much of their time locked away in a safe or jewellery box. Damage, wear and tear or just the age of a piece of jewellery can prevent you from wearing and enjoying it, when it should be your most prized and worn accessory.

In this blog we outline five benefits of jewellery repair for your heirlooms, so you and your family can continue to enjoy them.

Continue to tell the tale

Whether it is where the item came from, who the owner was, whether it was gifted, where it travelled or how it came to be in your possession, family jewellery tells a story. These items of precious metals and stones can tell us a lot about our family past, as well as general information on the styles and tastes of the time they originated from.

By repairing your family heirlooms you can keep that story going for generations to come and add another chapter to your family story.

Fix broken jewellery

Jewellery that has become broken or damaged – such as a bracelet with a broken clasp, ring with missing stones, or a brooch with broken fastenings – cannot be worn and enjoyed.  This can be particularly disappointing if the items of jewellery in question have been passed down through your family.  By investing in jewellery repair you can fix the items so that they can be worn and enjoyed, without the worry of any damaged fastenings resulting in you losing your treasured heirlooms.

Create matching sets

If you are lucky enough to inherit a beautiful brooch, then it will probably contain many stones, which even if the item itself is damaged or missing a stone or two, can still be used to create a new matching set.  For example, you may find that a broken brooch can be transformed into a matching pendant and earrings set for you to enjoy for many more years to come.

If you have lots of mismatched pieces of jewellery that cannot really be worn as they are, you might consider combining them into one item.  This is a very popular way of combining your family story and history into one piece, taking stones and metal from various heirlooms and creating them into one stunning piece of jewellery.

Turn one piece of jewellery into another

Styles and fashions change, so a piece of jewellery from a bygone era might not sit that well with your current tastes and wardrobe. This doesn’t mean you can’t continue to cherish your family heirlooms.  Instead we recommend turning one piece into another.  If you have inherited a piece of jewellery that you don’t typically wear, for example a ring, then why not have this recreated into a pair of earrings? By custom designing your old pieces into new items of jewellery that complement your style, you can maintain their sentimental value whilst at the same time achieving a beautiful new piece that makes a statement about you.

Give a unique gift

By repairing, restoring or remodelling old family jewellery pieces you can create a unique gift for a member of your family.  Perhaps an engagement ring to welcome a new member to your family, or a pair of earrings as a coming of age birthday present? Whatever the occasion and recipient, repairing those old unused items breathes new life into your family heirlooms and keeps the memories of their original owners very much alive.

Continue your family story and create heirlooms that your future relatives will be delighted to inherit, with jewellery repair and remodelling services from Allen Brown Jewellery. Please call us on 01543 481948 to find out more.
