Gold Jewellery vs Silver Jewellery

Should you choose gold jewellery or silver jewellery?

The answer to this question depends upon many factors: is it for daily wear, or for an upcoming event? Are you searching for a personal piece, or one to be given as a gift? And, quite simply, which one do you prefer?

As is the case with many queries we receive regarding jewellery, there is no right or wrong answer. There are only your preferences, style, and budget to consider, so let’s explore whether you should go for gold or silver pieces when adding to your jewellery collection this winter.

What Colour Jewellery Suits Me?

For as long as humans have been wearing jewellery, we have been drawn to gold and silver. Few other metals carry the same stylistic weight and instant recognisability that they do, and their timeless, global appeal continues to make them two of the most coveted materials available today.

When faced with the choice between these two dazzling options, there are a few key features to consider that will help you to narrow your selection down and make the best decision for your jewellery box.

Occasion

Gold jewellery will complete an outfit for a special occasion like no other material can, so do you have any important events scheduled in the coming months? The run up to Christmas is certainly the time to invest in a new gold jewellery set that will capture the glow of the festive candles and intensify the light of the fireworks!

Whilst gold is best reserved for formal events, there are also many occasions that call for silver jewellery and its ability to transition from day to night without overpowering the outfit. Silver is also an excellent choice for daily wear and semi-formal occasions, so the right choice for you will depend upon whether you are looking for pieces that can be worn every day or ones that will be worn sparingly for maximum effect.

Characteristics

There are a few physical characteristics that will influence how silver and gold jewellery will look upon you, including:

  • Skin Tone: This will vary from wearer to wearer, but if you’re looking to make your decision based upon what works best for most jewellery lovers, then the general rule of thumb is that silver works best with cool undertones whilst people with warm undertones may prefer the equally warming tones of gold.
  • Hair Colour: When choosing a material based on what will best suit your hair, the key idea is to go for tones that contrast, rather than complement. This means that if your hair is already a light blonde then gold might not offer the accentuation you’re looking for, as it shares a similar tone, whereas if you have brown or red hair then gold will stand out against it whilst also pairing perfectly with its darker shades.
  • Eye Colours: Even your eye colour can make a difference – silver is the perfect accentuation for bright blue eyes, whilst gold’s warm, rich hue complements green and brown eyes.
